Maputo Bay

Inhaca, Santa Maria and the islands of the bay.

Out of the capital, the day runs between Inhaca, the sandbanks and the beaches of the bay. It is the other half of what Bússola Azul does in Mozambique.

  • Baía de Maputo e Inhaca — Santa Maria, Inhaca — a baía vista da praia
  • Maputo Bay and Inhaca — The boats on Santa Maria beach
  • Inhaca Island

The island at the mouth of Maputo Bay, with a marine reserve and coral reefs.

Inhaca closes Maputo Bay to the east and is the best known of southern Mozambique’s islands. It has some of the most southerly coral reefs in the world, a marine reserve, and a marine biology station run with Eduardo Mondlane University. You reach it by boat from Maputo.

  • Santa Maria Peninsula

Facing Inhaca — pale sand and calm water on the bay side.

The Santa Maria peninsula reaches out opposite Inhaca and closes the bay to the south. On the inner side the water is shallow and calm — it is where we beach the boats and where the day is spent.

  • Portuguese Island

An empty sandbank, a short hop from Inhaca.

Small, low and unbuilt, Portuguese Island is little more than white sand ringed by clear water. It lies off Inhaca and is a regular stop on days out on the bay.

  • Machangulo

The spit of land between the bay and the open ocean.

Machangulo separates Maputo Bay from the Indian Ocean, with high dunes on one side and sheltered water on the other. It is the least built-up stretch of the whole bay.

  • Xefina Island

Off Maputo, with the ruins of the old fortress.

Xefina sits opposite the city, minutes away by boat. It holds the ruins of a fortress and of military works, which makes it the closest and the most historical of the bay’s stops.

  • Maputo Bay

A whole day at sea, just off the capital.

The bay is the starting point for everything we do in Maputo: island tours, transfers, sunset outings and the events on board the catamaran.

Maputo · a maior da frota

Pérola do Índico our 55-foot catamaran.

A deck with cushions and grass, a DJ booth on board and an indoor lounge. This is where Bússola Azul’s weddings, birthdays, graduations and corporate events happen, on Maputo Bay.
