Benguerra is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, part of a region shaped over thousands of years by sand, sea and coral reef.
For many years the island was bound up with the life of the local communities, who drew on its marine resources for fishing and subsistence. That human presence and those traditions are an important part of Benguerra’s identity.
In 1971 the Bazaruto Archipelago was declared a National Park, beginning a new chapter in the protection of its rich biodiversity. The island is known internationally today for its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear water, dunes and extraordinary marine life.
